Discover the magic of the emboss resist technique to create a vibrant background for your Christmas cards using the playful Reindeer Fun bundle. This fun technique adds a unique touch to your cards and allows you to explore alternative colour palettes beyond the traditional red and green, bringing versatility and whimsy to your holiday crafting.
Emboss Resist Technique with Reindeer Fun
Inspiration came from a beautiful creation by my team member Deb, who participated in a recent card swap. Deb’s card featured a delightful combination of Peach Pie and Petunia Pop, along with the Reindeer Fun bundle. Using the emboss resist technique, Deb created a striking background that highlights the adorable reindeer while incorporating non-traditional Christmas colours.
The other swaps can be seen on my Crafting Community Swaps blog post.
How to Do the Emboss Resist Technique
Firstly, prepare a piece of basic white cardstock by rubbing it with an embossing buddy to remove any static. Next, stamp your chosen image—I used the snowflakes from the Reindeer Fun bundle—using VersaMark ink. Cover the image with white embossing powder, tap off any excess. Heat it with a heat tool until the powder melts and the image becomes glossy.
Finally, once the embossing is set, the real magic begins. Use a blending brush to apply ink over the embossed images. The ink won’t adhere to the embossed areas, creating a resist effect that allows your stamped image to pop against the coloruful background. Wipe off any excess ink from the embossed areas with a dry tissue, and you’ll be left with a vibrant, high-contrast background that’s sure to impress.
Cleaning Embossing Powder from Ink Pads
If some of the embossing powder gets onto your ink pad during the process, don’t worry—it can be easily removed. Simply use a piece of packing tape to lift the powder off the surface. Gently press the tape onto the powdered area and peel it away. Repeat with a fresh piece of tape until your pad is clean. This ensures your ink pad remains in great condition without losing much ink.
Reindeer Fun Emboss Resist Card Details
I die-cut the leafy window to frame the playful reindeer scene. Secondly, I embossed the card front using the Snowflake Sky 3D embossing folder, adding an extra layer of texture and dimension. The reindeer are placed just outside the leafy window, standing on a torn paper to represent a snowy landscape. For the sentiment, I stamped directly onto the ‘snow’ for a grounded look.
I die-cut small bells from Peach Pie cardstock and placed them near the top right for balance. Finally, a linen thread bow ties everything together and enhances the playful feel of the card.
Using the emboss resist technique with the Reindeer Fun bundle, you can create stunning Christmas cards that stand out with vibrant backgrounds and non-traditional colours. This technique is easy to master and adds depth and contrast to your designs, for truly special cards.
