Fern & Flora Embossing Ink Magic

This week I’m sharing a fun inking technique that I’m calling Fern & Flora Embossing Ink Magic. This is a technique I’ve used before, and if you’d like to see another example, be sure to check out my earlier project featuring the Sunflower 3D Embossing Folder. In the video tutorial for that project, I explored several different ways to use embossing folders to create unique backgrounds and effects.

How Fern & Flora Embossing Ink Magic Works

The best part about Fern & Flora Embossing Ink Magic is that you never know exactly how the finished piece will look. Every panel turns out slightly differently, making each card completely unique.

For this technique, I embossed the patterned paper using the Fern & Flora embossing folder and then applied ink over the surface. Because the paper was debossed on the side featuring the leaves, those areas weren’t touched by the ink and retained the original colours from the printed paper. This creates beautiful variations of green throughout the design while also highlighting the detailed texture from the embossing folder.

Creating Interest with Layered Panels

For this card design, I cut the embossed and inked panel into sections before mounting them onto coordinating Soft Sea Foam cardstock. I love how this simple step breaks up the background and adds even more visual interest to the finished card.

The layering also helps draw attention to the embossed texture while creating additional dimension without adding bulk.

Adding a Coordinating Sentiment

To complement the soft green tones, I stamped the sentiment using Peaceful Pine ink, one of the beautiful new In Colors. The sentiment is stamped onto Soft Sea Foam cardstock, keeping the colour palette cohesive and allowing the embossed background to remain the focal point.

Finishing Touches with the Fern & Flora Flowers

In my video tutorial, I also demonstrate how to assemble the small flowers from the Fern & Flora bundle. Once assembled, I lightly sponged them with Soft Sea Foam ink to maintain a tonal look that coordinates perfectly with the background.

These delicate flowers add just the right finishing touch and tie all the elements of the design together beautifully.

Inside I simply stamped another sentiment, from the Delicate Whispers stamp set and added a second generation Soft Sea Foam Leaf.
