In this video, I share how to use a sketch book for card making ideas to record your favourite card layouts and designs. Having a sketch book on hand gives you a great starting point whenever you need inspiration for a new project.
Rather than starting from scratch every time, you can refer back to successful designs, complete with measurements and layout details, making the creative process even easier.
Sketch Book Ideas for Card Making: Record Your Favourite Layouts
I began with a sketch of a Designer Series Paper (DSP) layout that I have used before and added it to my sketch book. Once I had the basic design recorded, I worked out the measurements for each piece.
To make sure the sizing was correct, I first tested everything using copy paper. After confirming the measurements, I added those details to my sketch book alongside the sketch. This means I can easily recreate the design in the future without having to work everything out again.

With my sketch complete, I cut the card base, layering pieces and DSP panels ready to assemble the card.
For this project, I used the Beautiful Ordinary Designer Series Paper. One of the things I love about this paper is that it features colourful patterns on one side and coordinating black-and-white designs on the reverse, creating a striking contrast when used together.

Bring Your Sketch Book Ideas for Card Making to Life with the Wild Bunch Stamp Set
I’m using the Wild Bunch stamp set, which is the June 2026 Product of the Month. The set includes four adorable animal images, so I decided to create a coordinated set of four cards, featuring a different animal on each card.
For the focal layer, I used the fifth-smallest die from the Everyday Arches Dies and cut it from Basic White cardstock. I then blended a simple sky and ground background onto each arch to create a scene for the animals.

Adding Sentiments and Finishing Touches
The sentiments are from the Wild Bunch stamp set and were heat embossed in white onto coloured cardstock. I then die cut them using the Stylish Shapes Dies, creating the perfect finishing touch for each card design.

Why Sketch Book Ideas Make Card Making Easier
I plan to use my sketch book more often to record my favourite card layouts and designs. Not only does it provide inspiration when working with new stamp sets and papers, but having the measurements recorded alongside each sketch saves time and makes recreating designs simple and stress-free. My book was created by Martin Stone, he sells on Amazon under the title Sketch Mayhem.
