How to Make a Suitcase with Pop-up Plane and Card with Stampin’ Up! Take To The Sky Suite

Two weeks ago, I attended a team event over the weekend, where fellow demonstrators shared their creative projects for everyone to make. It was a fantastic time filled with socializing and crafting.

During the event, a particular project—a charming suitcase with a pop-up plane and card—caught the attention of a few teammates. After I posted about the projects we made, two people specifically requested instructions for this one. Originally designed by Delwyn Horner, I’ve since modified it a little to add my own twist.

If you want the instructions of how to make this card, scroll to the bottom of this post where there is a free downloadable PDF.

A Perfect Match for Your Card-Making Classes

This suitcase project aligns beautifully with the cards we’re making in classes this month using the Take to the Sky Suite. The versatility of this suite makes it ideal for crafting a variety of fun, easy cards, especially those geared toward the guys. The Take to the Sky Designer Series Paper offers endless possibilities for decorating both the inside and outside of your suitcase, helping to create that perfect, personalised look.

Crafting the Pop-Up Plane Inside the Suitcase

In Delwyn’s original design, she featured a pop-up plane inside the card. I decided to take a different approach by incorporating the plane directly into the suitcase. To create a cohesive look, I also decorated the inside of the suitcase. This not only hid the pop-up window sheet but also added a vintage touch, reminiscent of old suitcases lined with fabric.

Ideas for Filling Your Suitcase

This cute suitcase makes an excellent gift box. You can fill it with small cards or tags, gift vouchers, chocolates, or other small treats. The small card I made to fit inside the suitcase features a vintage-style plane pattern on the front, keeping in line with the travel theme.

Adding a Decorative Touch with the Heartfelt Hexagon Punch

For decoration, I used the Heartfelt Hexagon punch, which perfectly complements the vintage travel theme. I added a plane to the sentiment, tying everything together seamlessly. For the inside of the card, I wanted the clouds to appear as if they were behind the plane. Here’s how I achieved that effect:

  1. Stamp the Plane: Start by stamping the plane onto the inner panel of your card.
  2. Create a Mask: Stamp the plane again onto some masking paper, then carefully cut out the plane shape.
  3. Mask and Stamp the Clouds: Place the masking paper over the plane you stamped on the card. Then, stamp the clouds around and over the masked plane.
  4. Remove the Mask: Once you remove the mask, the clouds will appear to be behind the plane, creating a beautifully layered effect.

Final Thoughts

The Take to the Sky Suite has been a highlight in my classes this month, offering endless creative possibilities. Don’t forget, the Take to the Sky Designer Series Paper is part of the Designer Series Paper Sale, running until August 31st. Whether you’re crafting for Father’s Day, birthdays, or just because, this suite is perfect for creating memorable and personalised projects.

If you missed last week’s post, I shared how to make a Father’s Day card using the same suite of products, which pairs wonderfully with this suitcase project.

I hope this inspires you to create your own suitcase with a pop-up plane and card. Happy crafting!
