Today, I’m excited to show you how to use a sketch to create a unique card design with Winter Meadow DSP. Sketches are a perfect starting point and can add a fresh twist to your card-making. When you use a sketch, you get a basic layout that you can customize with your own colours, patterns, stamps, and embellishments. It’s like having a blueprint that brings structure to your creativity.
The sketch had a prominent join line on the right side, which immediately caught my eye. Figuring out how to achieve this with designer series paper took a bit of thought.
DESIGN DETAILS
The sketch was posted by Stampin’ Fancy Friday, and I found a great tip from others who had already tried it. One person mentioned layering the pieces to achieve the perfect fit—problem solved!
To create this layered look, I cut the top right DSP as a full layer. For the bottom piece, I used the same width but made it shorter to form the right join line. For the angled piece, I started with a full layer, angled it over the other pieces, then flipped it over. I traced where the layer extended past the rest and trimmed it to fit seamlessly.
Interpreting and Using a Sketch
Remember, when you use a sketch, it’s just a guide. You can add or remove elements, adjust sizes, or even change the orientation. In my example, I made the sentiment longer, overlapping it over the circle for added style. Since sketches don’t provide measurements, they let you get creative.
Choose colours and embellishments that suit your theme. I used DSP, but you could use strips of cardstock over a stamped background for similar results.
Winter Meadow DSP and Southern Hemisphere Christmas
Christmas in the southern hemisphere means summertime! The Winter Meadow DSP, with its beautiful foliage, trees, and dreamy washes, gave me plenty of options to interpret as summer imagery in this card design. Using foliage and soft washes from this DSP brought a green, seasonal look to my card that fits our summer Christmas vibe.
This gorgeous paper is hand painted; you can’t find these unique designs anywhere else. These nature themes make perfect backgrounds on card fronts. The deer page is designed to fit on a card front—it has a repeating pattern, so you can cut each sheet into six pieces and have a full pattern for your card background.
